Congrats on your win Matty,,, well deserved.

As per the gout, I've had it too Some alcohols can set it off, as can tomatoes (except for Roma tomatoes), and oranges. As long as I stay off those I seem to have no problems at all. Red wine doesn't seem to set it off that much, but I had some last week and my thumb has turned really bad again and my elbow feels like someone is shoving a hot iron into it. Not fair!!! Guess it's one of those things where you need to figure out what sets it off for you. Hope that helps some.

Cheers for now,

Robyn.

Congrats Matthew on your win. awesome 6 week results.

As for gout my uncle has it and alcohol def sets it off as well as 'rich' foods (he eats lots of meat).I've read also plants/veg from the nightshade family such as tomatoes and auberinges can set it off. hope your foot is feeling better.

Good luck for the rest of the contest!

Thank you Robyn & Congratulations to you also ,

I'm not sure what sets it off for me yet, but it is now moving back to my other foot. Someone at work told me there are some new meds out now for it that I may have to try if I can't get it under control.

I will just keep taking the pain and hope for the best. I have been using some vitamins and Dark Cherry Juice, but I'm not sure they help...

Cheers,

Matty G.

Thank you Gillian,

Congrats to you as well. I have heard most of the same. I have been staying away from alcohol, red meats, and any type of organ meats. I eat a lot of salsa, so maybe I will cut those out as well...

Great luck to the rest of the contest,

Matty G.

Congratulations, Matty!! Excellent job.

I have had high uric acid for a very long time (since I was 6) and it turned into gout in my 20s. Currently I'm on 300mg of Allopurinol every day and I can't remember the last time I had an attack (it might be time to revisit the doctor to test the incidence of attacks with a lower dosage). I believe the weight loss has helped significantly as well.

I noticed a few different things could set it off for me:
- lack of sleep (eg. 3 hours a night)
- stubbing my toe
- alcohol
- stress

or any combination of the above. I had no problem with red meat, rich food, seafood, tomatoes or any of the other factors that have been attributed to it.

One thing that set it off without fail was too much sugar - drinking a can of coke would cause my foot to throb. Strangely enough, the research mentioned seems to support my experience. Take a look at this and see what you think: http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2009/10/05/gout/

Hope this helps. Non-sufferers don't understand the debilitating pain this can cause.
